Devil’s Bowl Speedway Selected to Receive NASCAR Green Grant

Vermont track hopes to repair Irene damage with trees from “Clean Air Project”

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – Devil’s Bowl Speedway is going green again. The host site of the prestigious “Spring Green” stock car race has been selected to receive a grant from the NASCAR Green initiative and will plant trees in Vermont as part of the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project. The announcement was made during a conference for NASCAR Home Tracks promoters at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, FL on Saturday, February 16.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway was one of five NASCAR Home Tracks selected for the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project, joining Ohio’s Lake County Speedway, Kalamazoo (MI) Speedway, Pennsylvania’s Lake Erie Speedway, and Myrtle Beach (SC) Speedway. The NASCAR Green Clean Air Project debuted in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2009 and expanded to include the NASCAR Home Tracks program in 2011.

According to track co-owner Alayne Bruno, the goal for Devil’s Bowl Speedway is to help replenish some of the trees lost during Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011. Bruno and her husband Mike, who live in Castleton, VT, said that the NASCAR Green grant was one of the first programs Devil’s Bowl Speedway applied for when they took control of the speedway in November 2011, just over two months after Tropical Storm Irene took its toll.

“Vermont is the Green Mountain State and we’ve always been proud of to live and work here,” Alayne Bruno said. “Every day we see reminders of what was lost in Irene, and if we can help bring some of that ‘green’ back to Vermont, even if it’s just a small amount, hopefully that can help lift the spirits of those who are still recovering almost two years after the storm.”

NASCAR Green and Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s donation continues a commitment to helping Vermonters affected by Tropical Storm Irene; Devil’s Bowl Speedway hosted the “I Am Vermont Strong 100” race and a fundraiser for the Vermont Disaster Relief Fund in June 2012. Details of the NASCAR Green Clean Air Project grant, including locations and quantities of trees to be planted, will be announced at a later date. Devil’s Bowl Speedway’s 2013 stock car racing season opens on Sunday, May 5 with the 39th annual “Spring Green” event for the American-Canadian Tour Late Models and Devil’s Bowl’s weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions.
