Double Features, Pancake Championship Mean Family Fun at Devil’s Bowl

Proctor-Quenneville title fight down to just two points

WEST HAVEN, VT – Devil’s Bowl Speedway will be packed with family fun on Friday, August 28 at the annual “Double Stack Night” hosted by the Sugar & Spice Restaurant and Jones’ Donuts & Bakery. All four weekly stock car racing divisions of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Yandow Sales & Service and John Deere will race in double main event features, but the highlight of the night is sure to be the fourth annual Great North American Pancake Eating Championship.

Sugar & Spice in Mendon, VT has provided homemade pancakes and pure Vermont maple syrup for the Great North American Pancake Eating Championship since its inception in 2012. The field of prospective pancake punishers has expanded – both in numbers and waistline – each year and the spectacle has quickly become a can’t-miss event at the end of each summer.

Race fans of all ages are encouraged to enter on the night of the event; 10 adult eaters and 10 junior chompers will be selected at random – along with reserved spots for previous champions – and they will be given five minutes to devour (and retain) as many pancakes as they can. Competitors are provided water and syrup to help the pancakes slide down, but will be disqualified if anything slides back up.

Hometown favorite Allen Jones of Rutland, VT chewed through ten-and-a-half pancakes to win the inaugural Great North American Pancake Eating Championship, but Malcolm Woodward has made the long haul from the Canadian border town of Mooers Forks, NY to win in each of the last two years; his 2013 mark of twelve-and-a-half pancakes stands as the all-time record. Both are expected to return to battle on Friday night.

“These folks are doing real work here,” Devil’s Bowl Speedway media director Justin St. Louis said. “No one has better pancakes or maple syrup than Sugar & Spice, but the average rational person taps out at around three or four. Imagine cramming a dozen in your gut – it’s truly a sight to behold.”

Surrounding the culinary chaos will be an action-packed night of racing. Double feature races will be held for the Bond Auto Parts Modifieds, Central Vermont Motorcycles Late Models, Brileya’s Chrysler-Jeep Renegades, and Portland Glass Mini Stocks. Ron Proctor and Vince Quenneville Jr. are locked in one of the closest title fights in Devil’s Bowl history with just two points – a single on-track position – separating them for the Modified championship. Regular general admission remains in effect on Friday at just $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and free for kids age 12 and under. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., with racing at 7:00 p.m.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway is located on Route 22A in West Haven, VT, four miles north of Exit 2 on U.S. Route 4. For more information, visit www.DevilsBowlSpeedwayVT.com or call (802) 265-3112.
