Jimmy Ryan Back On Top at Devil’s Bowl Speedway; Tyler Travis claims biggest limited race of the year, Bachand earns first win
WEST HAVEN, Vt.-- When Saturday’s 30-lap Sunoco Sportsman Modified feature lined up, Jimmy and Randy Ryan sat together in row two behind polesitter Alex Palmer-Sawyer and his front row companion Nick Brundige. For Jimmy Ryan, the veteran modified campaigner of several years, victory lane had not been reached since 2021. For Randy, the sophomore campaigner in the speedway’s headline class, had not yet won a Sunoco Sportsman Modified feature at all. As the race went through its early stages Saturday, it became apparent that one of the racing Ryan brothers was going to claim the checkered flag.
Palmer-Sawyer and Brundige struggled on lap one and both gave way to the Ryan brothers with Jimmy leading lap one. The race went almost caution free, with no stoppage until lap 26 when James Hanson got turned around in the north end. Many good cars worked their way forward during that long green flag run, including 20th starter Vince Quenneville, Jr. and 14th starter Dave Camara. For the lap 26 restart, Jimmy and Randy held the front row with Derrick McGrew Jr. and Josh Leclaire slated to line up in row 2, but Leclaire broke under the caution period and Fire Swamp filled the vacant spot. The Ryan brothers took off on the restart and Jimmy Ryan powered to his first win since 2021. Randy was 2nd with Fire Swamp finishing 3rd. Derrick McGrew Jr. and Dave Camara completed the top-five.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman ran their biggest event of the season following the sportsman feature. Derrick Counter and Matt Wade, a pair of former mini-stock racers, had the front row for the 55-lap, $555-to-win feature. Counter led from lap one until lap six when Wade promoted himself to the top spot. Tyler Travis started in the second row and began hunting Wade down, passing him on lap 16 for the top spot. Wade challenged Travis low, but was never able to recover the lead, finishing 2nd. Billy Duprey finished 3rd from his 7th starting position. Bobbi Hults and Marty Hutchins completed the top-five.
In the DIRTcar 358 modified feature it was Mike Mahaney of Elizabethtown, NY. picking up the win. Joey Scarborough and Marty Kelly, III led the 19-car field to green with Scarborough taking the early lead with Josh Masterson, Mahaney and Felix Roy in tow. Mahaney slipped by Scarborough at the halfway point and did not look back, picking up the win. Felix Roy was 2nd with Tim Fuller charging from 9th to 3rd. Scarborough was 4th with Masterson 5th.
Aiden Benoure from Bristol, VT. impressed with an 87h to 1st run in the Hoosier Racing Tire Novice Sportsman class. Brandon’s Winston Forbes led laps one through 15, a career-best effort for him that ended with a 2nd place run. Rob Steves, Raelin Dunham and Rob Steele rounded out the top-five.
In Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint competition, Scott Bachand of St. Albans, VT. collected his first-ever feature win in 42 seasons of racing. The elusive win was delayed earlier this year when Bachand exhibited speed that was equaled only by his misfortune, but Saturday, the driver of the green and orange No. 8 stormed to victory lane with a dominating performance, taking the lead on lap seven after starting all the way back in 9th position. Ray Hanson, Quinn Quenneville, John Smith and Chris Pierce completed the top-five.
In full-fendered competition, Jake Fountain scored his second Devil’s Bowl win of 2025 in the Haiden Bordeau-owned No. 08 car. Fountain started 7th and took the lead from Jakobee Alger on the final circuit to score the win. Tyler Bell was 3rd with Jeremy Brownell 4th and Griff Mahoney 5th. Rookie Jeremy Browneel, Jr. won the B-feature. Normal Morrill collected his first 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic feature win of the season over Chad Merrill and TJ Knight.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway is back in action on Saturday, June 28 at 6PM with the annual “Independence Day Spectacular” featuring a 44-lap, $2,000-to-win Sunoco Sportsman Modified feature and the biggest and baddest display of fireworks in central Vermont!
