14 Drivers Visit Victory Lane on Mid-Season Championship Night at Devil’s Bowl
West Haven, VT - Former track champion Dave Camara returned to victory lane, and Felix Roy nabbed his first win ever at Devil’s Bowl Speedway as New England’s fastest half-mile track hosted the annual Mid-Season Championships with double features for seven divisions. When the dust settled on the event, which began on Saturday night and drifted into Sunday morning, 14 different competitors had captured feature wins. It was also “Autograph Night”, as the huge crowd on hand got to meet the drivers who pilot their favorite machines.
In the opening race of the night, a 25-lap feature for the DirtCar 358 Modifieds, Camara, also known as “Flash” from nearby Poultney, Vt., took full advantage of a front-row spot on the grid to take control early and was never seriously challenged. Roy advanced from the fifth starting position to second place and had the chance to overtake Camara on multiple restarts, but the veteran campaigner was sitting on a rocket ship and fought off each challenge. Mike Mahaney charged from the shotgun spot and finished third despite having a difficult time workimg through traffic. Josh Masterson crossed the line fourth, and Walter J. Hammond fifth.
After his runner-up run in the first 358 feature, Roy was not to be denied in feature number two for the division as he overcame the family battle of Hammond vs Hammond to add Devil’s Bowl to the growing list of tracks he has won at during his career. After James Fadden set the early pace, Walter Hammond Jr. grabbed the point, and soon Walter J. Hammond claimed the second spot, setting up a family feud. After moving to second and chasing Hammond Jr. for several laps, Roy was finally able to find a line that was faster than the leader and successfully navigated a late race pass to cross the line first. Hammond Jr. held on for second, and Mahaney picked up his second third-place finish of the night. Tim Fuller overcame a problem early in the race to charge from the back of the pack to finish fourth. Masterson rounded out the top five.
Next up on the card was the speedway’s weekly headline division, the Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds, for a pair of 25-lap showdowns. In their first feature, Fair Haven’s Josh LeClaire, who has had one of the fastest cars all season long, finally saw Lady Luck shine on him as he rolled to his first win of the season. LeClaire has been snake-bitten on several occasions when he seemed to have the best car, but on this night, everything came together. Alex Palmer-Sawyer and AJ Munger led the field to the green flag, with Munger in control of the early stages. LeClaire quickly moved to second and battled with Munger for the lead. The duo who park next to each other in the pits also spent a great deal of time side by side on the track before LeClaire was able to pull away for the win. Adam Piper made a late charge to get around Munger for second. Munger placed third, followed by Justin Combs and Jimmy Ryan.
In the second feature, Troy Audet outdueled Tanner Siemons to earn his first win of the season. Siemons went to the lead after the green flag dropped and led through the early stages, but it was clear Audet had a fast piece. After a fierce confrontation, Audet was able to wrestle the lead from Siemons, but the Orford, N.H. native didn’t go away quietly. On restart after restart, it appeared as if someone was pushing a rewind button. Audet hugged the inside line, with Siemons testing the extreme outside section of the track. Each time Siemons seemed to have an advantage in turns one and two, Audet would power away down the backstretch. Despite his best effort, Siemons could not overcome Audet’s strong effort and settled for second. Frank Hoard III continued his recent ascension to place third, followed by points leader Joey Scarborough and Scott Towslee.
The O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman 20-lap twin bill featured winners from opposite ends of the career spectrum. Youngster William Lussier Jr. was victorious in the first race with, veteran Steve Miller capturing the nightcap. In feature number one, Miller and Ed Bell sat on the front row with Bell leading the early laps, but Lussier Jr. was the early aggressor. Once “The Hometown Kid’s Kid” worked his way to the lead, it was clear who had the fastest car as he ran away for the win. Vastly improved driver Charlotte Morin made the haul from Saint-Cesaire, QC, worthwhile with a second-place finish. William Durpey, Matt Wade, and Bell closed out the top five.
In round two, Miller started on the front row again, but this time the outcome was dramatically different. After dropping to 18th in the previous race, Miller survived an early race clash with Cody O’Brien to pull away and drive under the checkers first. Gary English came on strong late to place second, followed by Lussier Jr., “Santa Bob” Kilburn, and Logan Denis.
The first 15-lap Hoosier Tire Novice Sportsman feature was dominated by Jason Kerr, as he jumped to the early lead and drove off for his first win of the season. Kerr started on the pole and made it clear from the beginning he had the car to beat. Trevor Hurlburt finished second, Winston Forbes third, Russell Farr fourth, and Aiden Benoure fifth.
In the second feature, Raelin Dunham recovered from a late-race penalty for jumping the start to carve out her second win in as many weeks. Dunham started 14th in the caution-filled event and took advantage of the high attrition rate to move into contention. Erin Vien set the early pace before Mark McGinnis made his way to the top spot. After a caution on lap 7, McGinnis, a rookie, found himself surrounded by past winners. Dunham and McGinnis fought tooth and nail for the first lap after the restart, but Dunham gained the advantage as they drove under the halfway crossed flags, and she was never under pressure from that point on. Rob Steves finished second, Benoure third, Matt Cram fourth, and Forbes fifth.
Gage Provencher earned his second consecutive win in the opener for the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprints. Multi-time winner Ray Hansen was reeling in Provencher when he suffered a mechanical issue. With Hansen out of contention, Provencher held off Scott Bachand to park his car in victory lane. Quinn Quenneville, Jordan Zakrzewski, and Chris Pierce also recorded top-five finishes.
In the second feature, Bachand enjoyed his first win in 42 years so much a couple of weeks ago that he decided to do it again. Bachand never lifted, using a late slingshot move in turns three and four to overtake Zakrzewski and his sister Jenna to nab the top spot, and then held off the late-charging Hansen and Provencher to add another trophy to his collection. The racing Zakrzewski siblings finished fourth and fifth.
TJ Knight and Eric Friend split a pair of features in the Ninth State Cannabis Crown Vic division. Knight visited Victory Lane for the first time after moving up from the mini stocks for 2025. Knight held off Bradford Cram, Friend, Scott Richner, and Chad Merill in the first 12-lapper.
In the second feature, the top three shuffled the order as Friend was first to the checkers, followed by Cram, and Knight. Norm Morrill and Richner followed the first trio across the finish line.
The Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stocks were split into two groups, each running a single feature. Points leader Tyler Bell weaved his way through the field from the 12th position on the grid to win his second feature in a row. Jeremy Brownell Jr., Chris Charboneau, Cody Dion, and Richard Fleury also gathered top-five finishes. Ryan Patch, who has been knocking on the door all season, finally drove through it in the evening’s finale. Patch and Damien Olden put on an entertaining show for the fans, with Patch thwarting all of Olden’s attempts to steal the win. Olden staved off Jake Mallory for second place. Jeremy Brownell was fourth and Kaleb Shepard was fifth.
The action returns to Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, July 12th, as the “Winged, Wild, Wicked Fast” Sprint Cars of New England invade the Green Mountain State. Grandstand admission is $20. Children under 12 are free. Infield parking is $30. Pit admission is $35 for members and $45 for non-members. Race time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
