Tim LaDuc Earns First Win of the Season, Mother and Daughter Bobbi Hults and Katrina LeClaire Finish 1-2 in Limited Sportsman.

The family theme continued Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on “Hometown Heroes First Responders Night” presented by Rutland Regional Medical Center. Mother and daughter, Bobbi Hults and Katrina LeClaire, finished first and second in the first of two features for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman. Father and son Jeremy Brownell and Jeremy Brownell Jr. each visited victory lane in the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stock Division. Meanwhile, defending track champion Tim LaDuc won for the first time this season in the Sunoco Sportsman Modified main event.
In the first feature of the evening, Derrick Counter led the first six circuits before Hults seized control on lap seven. After claiming the top spot, Hults ran away and hid from the rest of the pack. Behind her, a fierce battle was shaping up between Counter, LeClaire, and points leader Alex Layn. Determined to follow her mother across the finish line, LeClaire pulled off a dramatic final lap pass, sweeping around Counter and Layn to capture the runner-up spot on the podium. Counter barely held off Layn for third, with Marty Hutchins nabbing the final top-five position.
In the second 20-lap feature for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman, there wasn’t nearly as much drama as “The Race Kid” Tyler Travis cruised to his second victory of the season. Travis drove to the point as soon as the green flag dropped and never gave it up, leading all 20 laps. Behind Travis, William Duprey, Hutchins, and Logan Denis staged a fierce battle for the second spot. With a huge advantage, Travis cautiously worked his way through lapped traffic, allowing Duprey to close in, but it was too little, too late. Hutchins held on for third, Denis fourth, and LeClaire picked up her second top-five finish of the night, this time with Hults following her across the stripe in sixth.
LaDuc proved that sometimes a negative can have a silver lining in the Sunoco Sportsman Modified feature. After his motor expired during hot laps a week ago, LaDuc debuted a new powerplant and rolled to his first victory of the 2025 campaign. Brent Warren set the pace for the first nine laps before being forced to the pits with a mechanical issue during a caution period. “The Orwell Express” took advantage of Warren’s woes and led the rest of the way, despite having to fight off Dave Camara after a caution on lap 19. Camara crossed the line second. Tanner Siemons charged from the 18th spot on the grid to finish third, earning the Elmo’s Pit Stop Hard Charger award. Josh Sunn and Vince Quenneville also recorded top-five finishes.
In the Hoosier Tire Novice Sportsman feature, rookie Mark McGinnis jumped from the pole position and led from green to checkers to win for the first time in his career. McGinnis had the fastest car all night but had to survive three caution flags that stacked the field up over the final three laps, including a pair of green-white-checkered situations, to celebrate the milestone victory. Trevor Hurlburt placed second, followed by Aiden Benoure, Rob Steves, and Chris Sumner.
Gage Provencher continued his recent domination of the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint division, rolling to the fourth win in his last five starts. John Smith had the fastest car over the first stage of the contest, building up a commanding lead, but Provencher was quickly weaving his way through the field. Provencher caught Smith and made the pass for the lead with four laps to go, and drove away to once again reach the checkered flag first. Smith finished second, Jordan Zakrzewski third, Ray Hanson fourth, and Chris Pierce fifth.
It was a Brownell family reunion in the Fisher Auto Parts split 15-lap feature events. Son Jeremy Brownell Jr. rallied to wave the checkers in the first of the twinbill, with his father Jeremy Brownell parking his ride in victory lane in the nightcap. In the first feature, Dawson Thompson led until lap 10. That’s when the younger Brownell turned up the wick and wrestled the lead away from Thompson and drove away for the win. Jake Barrows used a strong late run to advance to second. Jayde Pope, Chris Charboneau, and Cody Dion completed the top five.
In the second feature, not to be outdone, the senior Brownell made it a sweep, using his patented late charge to earn his third win of the season. Brian Blake led the way for the first nine laps before Brownell used a powerful move off of turn four to move to the front. Brownell finished ahead of second-place Kaleb Shepard, Blake, Speedy Bresette, and Adam Stewart.
Eric Friend once again flexed his muscles, winning his fifth Ninth State Cannabis Crown Vic feature of the year. It didn’t come as easily as it usually does, as Friend staved off a valiant effort from TJ Knight in a battle of the top two drivers in the point standings. Friend grabbed the lead on lap four and led until lap nine when Knight overtook him briefly. Knight took the Popsicle sticks for two to go, but Friend used an aggressive late pass to park his machine in victory lane. Chad Merrill, Bradford Cram, and Scott Richner also finished in the top five.
Rounding out the night, Jason Porter started dead last and somehow avoided multiple hazards to win the 50-lap Enduro. Porter was able to take advantage of problems on the cars of past winners Dan DeForges and Tim LaDuc, who were also driving strong pieces. Shane Wood, Eric Leno, and LaDuc all spent time at the front of the field before Porter took over on lap 35 and wasn’t challenged from that point on. Leno placed second, followed by Walter Scram, Chandler Sumner, and Kody Vermilyea.
Devil’s Bowl Speedway will be back in action on Saturday night, July 26th, when the Mohawk Valley Vintage Modifieds visit on “Legends Night”, brought to you by the Community College of Vermont.
