Devil's Bowl Speedway
Billy Lussier, “Santa Bob” Kilburn Score Popular Victories on Friend Construction “Night of Features.”
West Haven, VT- If the number of people in the victory lane photos is any indication, Billy Lussier and Bob Kilburn scored two of the most popular wins of the season on Friend Construction “Night of Features” at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday evening. Double features mean the opportunity to earn double points, with the track championship races heating up. Championship Night is only a month away, and the top contenders are scrapping and clawing for every point they can muster.
Point leader Joey Scarborough was the largest beneficiary on the night in the Sunoco Sportsman Modified Division, fashioning a pair of top-10 finishes while his closest challengers struggled. In the first feature, Scarborough started in the 10th spot, but quickly moved into a striking position. Brent Warren set the early pace, but Scarborough fired briskly on a lap six restart to capture the lead and wasn’t challenged the rest of the way. Warren completed his solid run with a second-place finish. Scott Towslee, Randy Ryan, and Billy Lussier completed the top five.
In the second Sunoco Modified feature, Lussier discovered that the high groove was the fastest way around the racetrack and rode the cushion to score the win in the Bob Ellis replica machine. Randy Ryan appeared to have the car to beat early on, leading the first five laps. Lussier got shuffled back on a restart but noticed that Josh Leclaire was having success on the high side and chose to move upstairs himself. It turned out to be the winning strategy. “The Hometown Kid” swept around Ryan on lap six and drove off for the victory. Ryan survived a fierce battle for second, outdueling Leclaire. Warren crossed the line fourth for his second top five of the night, with Derrick McGrew Jr. placing fifth.
In feature No. 1 for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Limited Sportsman, Alex Layn jumped to the lead from a front row starting spot and led flag to flag to pick up his first win of the season. Despite a disastrous last couple of weeks, Layn entered the night only trailing points leader Logan Denis by 26 points. After becoming the first-ever winner of a side-by-side race a few weeks ago, Layn was finally able to park the No. 751 in victory lane. Cody O’Brien, who also had a fast piece, crossed the line second, followed by Jason Quenneville, William Lussier Jr., and Bob Kilburn.
In the second O’Reilly Auto Parts main event, “Santa Bob” Kilburn navigated the “North Pole Express” through the moonlit sky to collect his first win of the season. Katrina Leclaire, in search of her first win of the year, controlled the first stage of the contest and took the crossed flags from starter Bob Bigelow at the halfway point. Kyle Kerr and Kilburn, however, were starting to reel in the “Missfire Motorsports” driver. Kilburn overtook both Kerr and Lelcaire on lap 11 and held off one of his proteges, Kamden Duffy, in the closing laps. Duffy finished second, Kerr third, Leclaire fourth, and Marty Hutchins fifth.
The Hoosier Tire Novice Sportsman Division entered the weekend with only four points separating the top three drivers, and 20 points dividing the top five. In their first feature of the night, Russ Farr led the pack for the first three circuits. Jim Mattison wrestled the lead away from Farr on lap four and never let it go. Mattison’s win wasn’t without some tense moments, however, as fellow Queensbury, NY driver Raelin Dunham powered through the field from the 13th position on the grid to apply pressure over the final laps. Dunham showed Mattison her front wheels on a couple of occasions, but Mattison was not to be denied the first win of his career. Dunham crossed under the checkers second, followed by James McLellan, Chris Sumner, and Matt Cram.
In Hoosier Tire Limited Sportsman feature No. 2, Trevor Hurlburt secured his first trip to victory land with an impressive run. Hurlburt has been quick all season long, but Lady Luck has not been on his side. With several of the group's heavy hitters bedeviled by problems, the stage was set perfectly for Hurlburt, who fought off a late rally from Matt Little. Sumner and Dunham completed their pair of top-five finishes on the night with a third and fifth, respectively. Farr rounded out a successful event with a fourth-place showing.
Gage Provencher continued his dominance in the Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint class as he sprang from the back of the pack to record his seventh win of the season in the opening feature of the show. Alyssa Vanderpool paced the field for the first six laps, but behind her, “Pigboy” was in attack mode. Provencher blew past Vanderpool on lap seven and pulled away for another convincing victory, increasing his grip on the championship lead. Quinn Quenneville, who came in second in the points chase, finished third, followed by Destin St. Clair and Jordan Zakrzewski.
In the second Friend Construction 500cc Mini Sprint showdown, Vanderpool bounced back to make the long haul from Sayre, Pennsylvania, seem a lot shorter on the way home as she picked up her first Devil’s Bowl win. Vanderpool launched from the fourth starting spot and quickly disposed of Eric Dingman, Alex Reed, and Riley Hebert. Vanderpool’s chances increased tremendously when points contenders Provencher, Quenneville, and Jenna Zak got tangled up on the frontstretch, with the trio all leaving via the hook. Vanderpool held off a stellar performance by Levi Cram to nab the milestone win. Cram, Chris Pierce, Jordan Zakrzewski, and St. Clair rounded out the top five.
It’s been a difficult 2025 for Adam Stewart, but the stars were finally aligned for him as he survived a battle of attrition to earn his first win of the summer in the first feature for the Fisher Auto Parts Mini Stocks. Richard Fleury took command for the opening laps, but Anthony Johnson drove around him on lap five. Johnson led the next five trips around the speedway before Chris Charbonneau overtook him. Charbonneau and his machine, nicknamed “Betty White,” took the white flag, but Fleury brought out the yellow flag before the race was complete. Under caution, Charbonneau’s car rolled to a stop on the backstretch with a faulty starter wire. On the restart, Stewart fended off Jerry Jordan Sr. for the win. Chris Hewitt was third, Jake Mallory fourth, and Gerard Jordan fifth.
In Fisher Auto Parts main event, No. 2 points leader Jeremy Brownell added another winner’s sticker to his car with his fourth win of the season. Damian Olden had his newly purchased ride dialed in and seemed to be on his way to the win after establishing a commanding lead. Brownell, using his usual strategy, methodically weaved his way through the pack and set his bullseye on Olden. The Greenwich, NY native caught a break when Shane Wood had contact with the turn four wall, forcing a caution. Brownell took advantage of the restart to move around Olden and went on to secure the win. Olden held off heavy hitters Tyler Bell, Kaleb Shepard, and Brian Blake to finish second.
The first 9th State Cannabis Crown Vic feature provided plenty of drama as Jarrod Colburn was awarded the win after TJ Knight was penalized. Chad Merrill in the Starsky and Hutch paint-schemed entry set the pace for the first seven laps. Elisabeth Dupont led lap seven, but a skirmish on the final circuit handed the win to Colburn. Knight was placed second, followed by Brad Cram, Dupont, and Scott Richner.
Points leader Eric Friend faced issues for the second time on the evening when he went off turn three and left the track on the back of a wrecker. That opened the door for another new winner. Merrill again had the fastest car and was leading the way with two laps to go when a mechanical issue ended his chances. Brad Cram inherited the lead after Merrill’s woes and outlasted Norm Morrill and Knight for the win. Colburn and Richner placed fourth and fifth to complete their successful nights.
The action continues at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, August 23rd, with the “Charlie LaDuc Memorial 54” win and you're in the Vermont 200 event for the Sunoco Sportsman Modifieds sponsored by Hulbert Supply. The Limited Sportsman, Novice Sportsman, 500cc Mini Sprints, and Mini Stocks are also scheduled to be on the slate, along with a 50-lap Enduro. General admission is $15, with kids under 12 admitted free. Infield parking is $25. Pit admission is $30 for members and $40 for non-members.
